These turkey burgers with caramelized onions are a total comfort food and the perfect mix of sweet and savory!
It may sound strange but caramelized onions was my favorite way to eat onions as a kid.
In Germany, we have a dish that is sort of like a ground meat filled noodle with caramelized onions and it’s the bomb.
Hard to explain but if you are curious google ‘Geschmälzte Maultaschen.’ This burger recipe in inspired by that German dish.
I love onions and almost always include it in my savory recipes.
With summer BBQ season upon us everyone’s in a need of a great burger recipe!
I love the simplicity of this burger and with the caramelized onions and mustard sauce, it has a ton of flavor.
This recipe can easily be used for mini burger sliders.
As with most German inspired dishes, I am pairing this burger with a mustard sauce.
The tangy mustard compliments the savory meat patty and sweet onions perfectly.
For a bit of green and a fresh bite, I am adding lettuce to the burger.
Butter lettuce is my preferred choice but you can use any lettuce you have on hand.

Steps
1 Done | Make The Caramelized OnionsCut your onions into half moon slices, medium thickness. To your skillet or pot add the olive oil and heat to medium-high heat then add your onion slices, stir, lower the heat to medium-low and cover. Leave it covered and undisturbed for 20-30 minutes. After 20 or 30 minutes, stir the onions, add a bit of salt and pepper and allow the onions to cook further for another 15-20 minutes, uncovered this time. Once the onions are at your desired caramelization, add the BBQ sauce, stir and turn off the heat. Adding the BBQ sauce is options but I highly recommend it! |
2 Done | Make The Mustard SauceWhile the onions are caramelizing, make the mustard sauce. To a small bowl, add all of the ingredients, mix well and give it a taste. If you prefer it to be a bit sweet add more honey/maple syrup and if you think it needs to be a bit more salty, add salt. Keep in mind that the turkey patties will also be salty and the onions will be sweet. |
3 Done | Make Your Turkey PattiesDivide your ground turkey into 3 or 4 equal portions and form into patties. Place on a parchment lined plate and season on side with a bit of salt and pepper, a little goes a long way! If you are using a skillet, heat your skillet on high and add a bit of olive oil, 1 tbsp will do. Once the oil is hot, lower your heat to medium-high and add the turkey burgers, seasoned side down. Season the other side with a kiss of salt and pepper. Cook the patties on each side for about 5 minutes on each side. For the BBQ grill, cook the patties approximately 15 to 17 minutes turning occasionally. The internal temperature of the patties should be about 165F. |
4 Done | Assemble the Burgers |
