This easy, 8-ingredient steamed silken tofu with ginger garlic sauce is packed with umami!

A combination of Japanese and Chinese flavors, this steamed silken tofu is fully plant-based and packed with protein.

Tofu, a soy bean curd, is made by pressing curdling soy milk into a solid block.

Some tofu is firm while others are more soft and smooth.

For this recipe I like using silken tofu which is super soft, slightly jiggly and melts in your mouth.

It’s made in a similar process to block tofu, except that the soy milk is coagulated without curdling the milk.

It is also left unpressed, it therefore retains all of its moisture while cooling.

Tofu contains several anti-inflammatory, antioxidants, fiber, potassium, magnesium, iron, and more.

There are many variations of this dish across China, Korea, Japan and other Asian countries.

Depending on what you have in your pantry and what flavor combination you like, you can make this more savory, sweet or spicy!

The onion, ginger and garlic combo is my personal favorite and instead of the traditional soy sauce, I prefer using coconut aminos.

Coconut aminos is made by fermenting coconut palm sap with sea salt. It tastes similar to soy but is slightly sweeter.

This steamed silken tofu with ginger garlic sauce pairs perfectly with with soba noodles and broccolini!

Steps

1
Done

Make The Sauce

Heat a sauce pot on medium-high heat for 30 seconds then add 2 Tablespoons of a neutral cooking oil.

Next, add the finely diced onion, ginger and garlic.

Allow the vegetables to sweat in the oil for 10-15 minutes on medium-low heat.

Add 1/2 cup of soy sauce or my personal favorite coconut aminos to the sauce pot, gently stir and allow it to cook and reduce for 10-15 minutes.

Done

Steam The Tofu

While the sauce cooks, steam the silken tofu.

Gently invert the silken tofu from its package onto a heat proof plate then place into a pot with a bit of water and a steamer basket.

Steam for 5 minutes.

If you do not have a steamer, place the tofu block in a microwave-safe bowl then cover the bowl with wet paper towel. Microwave the tofu for about 5 minutes.

Serve

Once the tofu and sauce are done, spoon the sauce over the tofu on the hot plate or bowl.

Garnish with thinly sliced green onion and sesame seeds.

You can also serve this dish cold!
