This boozy and spiced rum apple cider cocktail is the drink of the holiday season.

A two step cocktail recipe that can be served warm or over ice, depending on your preference.

For me, I am choosing over ice since I live in Florida and no matter the month, it’s a constant 80°F.

But let’s keep our fingers crossed for some cold fronts so that we can enjoy chilly weather and a hot beverage.

Ok back to this cider recipe!

In this post, I am making cider from scratch.

It is so easy to make and only takes a few ingredients and little time.

I like using raw, unfiltered apple juice as it has more flavor in my opinion.

Orange slices add that hint of citrus and balances the aroma as well.

The spices added to make the cider are allspice berries, cloves and freshly ground nutmeg.

I like using the whole spice but you can also use ground. Start by adding just a bit, simmer, taste then add more if needed.

Ground spices are stronger than whole.

After the apple cider is cooled, it is poured into a cocktail glass with dark rum and orange liqueur.

For garnish, I like to use a pretty star anise and a smokey cinnamon stick.

Yes, you set the end of the cinnamon stick on fire! It’s that wow factor that every cocktail needs.

Steps

1
Done

Make The Spiced Apple Cider

To a sauce pan add apple juice, 2 thick slices of orange, light brown sugar, allspice berries, cloves, and ground nutmeg.

Heat on medium heat and allow to simmer uncovered for 10 minutes, stir once or twice.

Remove from the heat and allow to cool completely.

2
Done

Make The Cocktail

To a cocktail glass add the cooled apple cider, dark rum, orange liqueur, and ice cubes if desired.

Garnish with star anise and cinnamon stick.

3
Done

Add Smoke

This step is obviously optional but does add that 'wow factor' as well as add aroma!

Using a lighter or match stick, carefully burn one end of a dry cinnamon stick until it starts to smoke.

After the smoke has evaporated, you can insert the stick into your drink.
