French toast bake is the perfect make-ahead breakfast for any special occasion or holiday morning!
This recipe is perfect for a holiday morning when you have your friends and family over for a big morning brunch.
You can easily make this dish the night before, leave it in the fridge overnight then simply stick it into the oven once you wake up!
As it bakes, you can set the table and get your tea or coffee started.
With each season comes varieties of fruit. I love serving this sweet dish with fresh berries but use anything you have on hand.
It only takes 6 ingredients to make this French toast bake and it’s also customizable.
To no-one’s surprise, French toast was not invented by the French!
Apparently, it was a man named Joseph French who created the dish in 1724, and advertised it as “French Toast” because he was grammatically inept and forgot the apostrophe.
Nowadays, you will be able to find this soft, sweet and custardy breakfast all over the world.
For that perfect texture outcome, a soft and slightly stale bread is best.
Slightly stale and dried out bread will allow for that custard to be absorbed by the bread.
Challah or brioche bread are my favorite for this brunch dish.
Steps
1 Done | Cut The BreadFirst, cut your bread into thick(ish) slices and see how many you can fit into your baking dish. I prefer using an oval shaped dish and just do one row of slices. |
2 Done | Make The Custard |
3 Done | Soak The Bread Slices and Arrange |
4 Done | Allow The Bread To Soak Up The Liquid |
5 Done | BakeAfter the bread has soaked in the liquid, remove the plastic wrap and add some blueberries (the more the better in my opinion). Bake the french toast bake (uncovered) in a preheated 350F oven for 45-55 minutes. Top the french toast bake with maple syrup and/or powered sugar as well as more berries or nuts if desired. |

It sounds very easy and it looks inviting !
Would coconut milk work?
Hi Steph! Yes, coconut milk would work as well 🙂
I am 100% making this for Christmas morning! This is exactly what I was looking for this year. We have had homemade cinnamon rolls usually and I wanted to try something simpler but equally warm and delicious.
Thank you for making this recipe ?!!!
